ARTIST RESIDENCY & GALLERY IN THESSALONIKI
MAP POETICS IN THE VARDARIS DISTRICT
POINT ZERO:
21 February – 28 February 2025

The exhibition Unfolding is the result of the first cycle of the artist residency program at bEam arts.
In the works of visual artists Julia Sossinka and Phillip Reeves paper is the main material, in which both artists unfold their creative worlds.
Julia Sossinka creates large-scale ephemeral installations from colored scraps of paper. In her work, she explores the relationship between materiality and space, showing great sensitivity to the reuse of her material. She often reuses pieces of paper from previous installations, adding material where she deems necessary. The realization of her work is an act of creative instinct and careful technique, responding to the space and unfolding within it rhythmically and chromatically.
In the present installation Unfolding Horizonts she moves in exactly this way. The space of bEam arts becomes the field of her work, creating the condition of a horizon within the exhibition space, changing the relationship and movement of the audience within it.
Phillip Reeves’ work utilizes paper in a different direction. He is particularly interested in how people dress and present themselves, and the significance of costume and clothing both within and beyond its context. Using sewing pattern paper, he creates and ultimately deconstructs costumes and garments, completely removing the human figure from the equation. The resulting works end up becoming objects that exist somewhere between a painting and a garment, as a fetish. His practice draws heavily on references, both from other artists and from the culture around him.
In his works for the exhibition, he focuses on traditional costumes as well as garments worn by famous figures of Greek literature and the arts. He analyzes each garment in detail and reproduces it in a careful and clear manner, giving a different perspective on what we take for granted.
